Quick Status Update

I just finished timing Episode 6 and figured I would go ahead and tell people. To the left is a screenshot showing my proposed schedule for timing the next group of episodes. If I can stick with it I'll begin scheduling the rest.

I talked with the translator this morning (this evening for him). Mostly checking in on how holidays are going, but we did talk about getting episode 6 translated. Unfortunately for you guys, he's going on a trip to Tokyo until January 3rd, and will be unable to work on anything until then. Fortunately I should have more episodes ready by then (plus the movie) so we can hopefully put out a consistent release for a little while.

The Promo for episode 6 will be released once I have a translated script for the episode. From there you can expect the episode no later than a week, as we edit and QC things so they read like proper English (unlike this blog post). This is our policy with all of our promos and episodes.

Last thing. We were asked in the comments last post about torrents. The answer right now is no. I just don't have the bandwidth to seed, nor the money for a seedbox right now. That said if anyone does and wishes to make a torrent they are more than welcome to, and encouraged to send us the link. We'll gladly add it to our Release page and write up a post about it on the front page.

So much for a quick update. I'm off to go rip VOBs off disk 2 so I can start timing episode 7. I hope everyone has a Happy New Year.

Merry Christmas

I hope everyone is having/had a good Christmas/Dec 25. No new release today, but we're going to try and get something out soon. I promise we may go many months between updates, but it's due to real life time constraints that is keeping us busy. If we were to call it quits (hasn't even entered my mind) I will post on here to let people know that they can go ahead and remove us from their lists.

I've posted on here before about some of the reasons for delay, but now I'm pleased to explain my behavior in not getting timings done. About a week ago I graduated college with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. For a good chunk of this fall there was not enough hours in the day to get both my school work and my work work done, let alone my hobbies. Well that's finished. I've started working at my real job, and timing episodes again. Episode 6 should be timed early this week, and I hope to get back on my original goal of timing an episode a week. That in no way means that we will have a release each week, but that should eliminate a major bottle neck.

So once again, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year.

Episode 5 Finally Released

Sadly that's not directed at OhPink.

It's finally here. No not the mecha, that's next episode. I mean a new episode of Ohranger, only several months late. I am never promising a schedule again. We'll release episode 6 when it's ready, but I have no idea when it will be. That goes for the movie as well.

The episode is a pretty good one, lots of brother this and brother that, and a real interesting defeat of the Monster of the Week.

So I've provided lots of ways for you to consume our release. There's the hardsubbed mp4 which should play on nearly any device under the sun, including iOS devices. Then there's the softsub mkv for those of you who prefer it to the hardsub. Of course if you already have a raw you can just download the script. If you want to download the script AND need a raw, we've got that available for you as well. I'm not sure why you wouldn't just grab the mkv, but the choice is yours.

Promo 5 Released

In the time it takes you to read this caption you could have finished watching the promo.

Guess what I found it my Dropbox folder last night? A translated script for episode 5. So while we run through it looking for mistakes, improving the flow, and tweaking the timing, sit back and watch this promo. Preferrably before going and watching some other toku. Like maybe the first episode of Kamen Rider Fourze. Or perhaps one of Space Sheriff series, with subs by Bunny Hat, Midnight Crew, and Hikari-senshi. The possibilities are endless.

Here's the stuf I said I wouldn't upload this weekend.

Weather wasn't as bad as I feared, so I decided what the hell, I'll up the episodes. So here's the raw and softsub for episode 4.

Nothing This Weekend

Not happening. By us at least.

I'm calling it now. I had planned to upload the raw and softsub of episode 4 this weekend, and hopefully get episode 6 timed. However for those not following American news, the east coast is being hit with a hurricane this weekend. I'm in central NC and should just get grazed by the outer edge (if at all), but I'm preparing for a weekend of power outages and leaving my computers off.

In good news, I spent all of 2 minutes talking to our translator, and he is aware of episode 5 being ready for him. Other than that I don't know to much more. My final semester at school started up last Wednesday and things have been hectic.

Episode 3 Raw and Softsub while you wait

Just like the title says, for your viewing preference. There's no hardsub because I didn't make any changes to the script and it was already h.264.

Still no word on episode 5 yet. Once I know it's being worked on I'll post the promo for it. I'm figuring I'll just stick with the hardsub mp4 for the promos, if you want softsubs of them too, now is the time to let me know.

Episode 2, Fresh from the encoder

Here's fresh encodes of episode 2. Same as before with episode 1. The script is entirely unchanged. So if you're happy with the old versions continue being awesome. I've tweaked the Raw for anyone that uses iTunes, enjoy.

Episode 1, now with softsubs

Volume 1 DVD Cover

I finished timing episode 5 this morning, and figured while waiting to translate I would look into how we encode and distribute the show. What does that mean? Not much, but I have brand new encodings of the episodes to give you, including for the first time ever, MKV softsubs, and the RAW. They are all h.264 video, encoded from the DVDs, The only difference between the Raw/mkv encode and the mp4 encode is the addition of the subtitles. Quality wise they are identical.

If you're wondering about the script, don't. I fixed the food error in the opening lyrics and it's Ohlé now instead of Ohle, but the episode itself is unchanged. Don't consider this V2, I certainly don't. If you're not picky don't feel obligated to download, you can enjoy your big old AVI file just fine.

One cool bonus before I stop posting. I said when we started this that we wanted our videos to be accessible on as many devices as possible. Well for all you out there with an AppleTV, iPhone or iPad (any iOS device really) I think you'll be pleasantly surprised if you try and add the Raw or Hardsub into your iTunes library.

Anyhow, here's the links, feedback is always appreciated and read (even if I don't respond). I'll go ahead and say now I'll be making more softsubs, and no I don't know when episode 5 will be released. That is entirely out of my hands for the time being.

I'm not dead!

  • Real Life(TM) sucks and is crazy right now
  • I'm literally in the middle of timing episode 5 right now.
  • Aegisub is open right now and everything
  • No idea when it will get translated, but I plan to get back to this in earnest
  • I apologize for the delay. Specifically I apologize for the lack of communication and the claiming it would be short.
  • Anyone interested in our Raws? I know KingRanger was posting them on the GUIS website, but I'm willing to up mine if there's interest. They will be in MP4, same encoding as our other releases, sans subtitles of course.
  • Back to timing.

Weekly Update, Week 3 of No New Releases

So it's week 3 and while I have no new Ohranger to give people I do have news.  Our translator has a stable internet connection and just needs to install Dropbox on his new laptop. Right now we're shooting to have either episode 5 or the movie released next week.

In the meantime here's a couple of freebies for you. I made encodes of the opening to test my mp4 encoding settings. I hadn't planned to release this since there's nothing of real value here, unless you're the kind of guy who likes to watch openings and endings without having to fast forward through an episode. Anyway I went and updated the script to the same as our last episode, so there's no food reference.

Weekly Update...a week late

So I wish I had some good news on our subbing front, but I really haven't had time to time (pun not intended, but appreciated none the less). I can't say much on the translation front other than that he arrived in Japan ok, and has begun training and working at his new job.

Two Items of note I wanted to talk about. As I'm sure some of you are aware there is a Super Sentai Movie Blu-Ray box set coming out (out now?) that contains every Sentai Movie from Goranger to Ohranger that was not just a re-edited TV episode. Now here's the thing.  I would love to be able to release an HD version of the movie, however it would be to expensive to do so, as I do not have a Blu-ray drive in my PC or the necessary software to rip and encode it.  I know there are groups out there who do encode from Blu-ray, but we are not one of them.  As always our scripts will be released along side our hardsubs, and if someone wants to be generous and encode a HD version we will gladly share the link on here.

Last item of the day. Could anyone recommend to me a good iPad app for blogger?

OMFG! Where are these guys?!?!

I'm sure people have been wondering when we're releasing the next episode of Ohranger, and why we haven't posted anything since the beginning of april.

Short answer: we've been busy with real life.

Long answer:
Real life swooped in and took away our time. In my case this means work and school have ratcheted things up a notch, leaving me little precious time to time.  I spend my work days staring at a computer screen so when things get busy there the last thing I find myself willing to do is a highly repetitive task in front of a damn monitor.  Good news is my classes for school are winding down so I should have time to pick things up again, hopefully starting next week.

My roommate/the translator got a new job and  is moving to Japan. This is another reason that we have nothing to release. We both want to continue this series, but there will definitely be a delay for the foreseeable future, while he settles in.

Where we stand right now:
Episode 5 is in the very early stages of timing. sgtkira from Hikari Senshi has provided us with a SRT file of a Portuguese translation of the movie. I did some spot checking of the timing, made a few shifts, converted it into an ASS file and sent it along to be translated (I have been told that it's been started on).  I would love if we could get one or the other released before the move. No promises though. I will continue timing during the delay, so hopefully we'll have a bit of a buffer on that front when we pick up again.

So I want to apologize for our vanishing act. We didn't have a post on here for over a month and that's just unacceptable.  I will try and post at least once a week with an update for people even if it's just to say that we didn't work on anything.  I also what to remind people (or inform if you've not noticed) that we have an RSS feed of the blog, which includes the entire post.  It's a great way to stay up on our progress without having to bother checking here only to see the same old blog post. As I mentioned it's a full post feed so you'll have DL links in there when we make a release.

Episode 1 V2 Now available.

UPDATE: Happy April 1st everyone,  I hope everyone got a little kick out of this, and didn't get to upset.  Obviously this is not episode 1 V2, but I'll leave the link up here for a little while longer for prosperity.

We've gone back through and took a second look at episode 1, fixing some of the mistakes we made with translations, cleaning up the timing, and improving the encoding to match the others.  Hope everyone enjoys.

Episode 4 Out Now

Suicide. You know, for kids!

Another episode is out, I think it's a good one.  The villains plan seems a little better defined then "Just send down a monster to Japan and hope that a Super Sentai team doesn't find it."

Next episode should be out a little quicker than this one.  In addition we've started work on the movie and are planning to have it released on the anniversary of its premiere date.  If you're American just remember to file your taxes beforehand.

Promo 4 Out Now

They look more like children to me...

This of course means that episode 4 has been timed and should be out in the next couple of days.  I went with Media Fire for the upload this week.  The promos have been less than 3MB each week and it seems kind of silly to have people spend more time waiting in line than downloading the file.  I'll probably upload the scripts to Media Fire as well.

Episode 03 Finally Released

Someone call the FBI.

Longer than I would have liked, but real life comes first. Episode 3 is now out and it features one of the most original plots in any Sentai. Of course by original I mean common.

3 episodes in, and not a hint of mecha.  We must be patient. I've seen Power Rangers Zeo, I know they have them.

Quick Public Service Announcement

I think it's safe to say at this time that everyone reading this has heard about the massive earthquake that hit Japan.  In the face of this tragedy CStoys International and the Friends of Justice have gathered together to raise money for the relief fund.  We've placed a widget on the site that you can use to donate to their efforts. While we all keep the people of Japan in our hearts, minds, and prayers please try to help if you can. Show that we in the Toku community care about the innocent as much as the heroes we cheer for each week.

Thank you.

Promo 3 out now

Wonder were Doc gets it from...
Here's another promo to get you ready for the next great installment of Ohranger.  In the time it takes you to read this you could have watched the promo and become all psyched up for episode 3.  Thursday is St. Patrick's day so don't expect the episode then.  It should be out Friday or Saturday though.

Good News Everyone! Episode 2 V1.1 available

Good news everyone!

I've been able to fix the repeater issue by using YAMB and mp4box to mux the mp4.  While I was at it I also switched from faac to nero to encode the audio, and have had a friend test the file on the iPhone 4.

Enough inside baseball. Here is episode 2 how it was supposed to be, properly encoded, and compatible with iOS (and by virtual pretty much every other device).  File size is 10MB larger, but eh.

There is no change to the script, but I did fix the timing issue with the naration after the credits.  That's the only change that doesn't deal with the encoding.

Episode 2 is repeating itself, repeating itself

It was brought to our attention (both in the comments here and on our thread at Henshin Justice that the video for episode 2 repeats itself at the end, but without sound. I've gone and confirmed this and want to apologize. We didn't catch this because the encoded video plays just fine on my windows7 box using Windows Media Player Classic and CCCP.  However on my Mac it would repeat on both Quicktime and VLC.  To see how widespread this is I ran the video on my PS3 and HTPC running Linux and XBMC. Here's what I've found

  • On windows using CCCP and Windows Media Player Classic the video plays fine. Video is shown to be the correct length.
  • On Windows Media Player 12 the video plays once, but thinks it is 39 minutes long, the progress bar is broken as well.  It will not play the second half
  • On OSX the video will play twice on Quicktime, second time without sound.  Same with VLC on OSX
  • On the PS3 the video is believed to be 39 minutes long, but will only play the episode once, with sound.
  • On Ubuntu Linux running XBMC the video length is the correct size and plays only once, with sound.
I'll try and fix this for the next promo and episode 3, but since this does not affect the ability to watch and hear the entire episode there probably won't be a version 2 any time soon.

Episode 2 Out Now

Be afraid Baranoia. Be very afraid.

In this episode the other four members of Ohranger join Ohred in the fight. This episode is also the first in Ohranger to have a giant monster. Still no mecha though.  I'd say more but that would be spoilers.

You might have noticed this release is in mp4 instead of avi.  Making this switch is something I've wanted to do from the start, but lacked the technical knowledge to do so. Switching from Xvid in an avi container to h.264 in an mp4 container allows for a (arguably) better picture in a smaller file size. How small? About 50mb on average. We're also looking to have our releases play on as many devices as possible.  If my audio encoding was correct this should play on iOS devices as well as the PS3, Xbox360, and any computer with a decent codec pack.  That said I don't have an iOS device to test on (iPad2 coming my way soon, but not yet) and the person I had test on the 360 is off on spring break.  If we broke the 360 support we promise to release an Xvid version.

Promo 2 out now

One of the many dynamic camera angles found in Toku.
While we work on the Second episode enjoy a tasty promo.  If this was TV we would show this five times a day every day until the episode aired.  Aren't you glad we aren't TV?

Episode 1 Out Now

We are pleased to announce that our first full episode is now available.  On this day, 16 years ago (holy cow, was it really that long ago?!) Choriki Sentai Ohranger premiered on Japanese television.

Lots of destruction in this episode, the darker tone they wanted to have really shows through in these first few episodes. Also if you though modern reds hogged the spotlight...well don't worry you'll see a complete roll call next episode.

If you are looking for Raws for the script you can check on over at Toku Raw Revolution. While they are not our Raw source (we bought our own copies of the DVD) I checked the first episode against our script and it appears to work fine without any adjustments.

Choriki Sentai Ohranger Promo 1

So it's a little later than I originally said, but here is our first release,  The promo for episode one. Since we have all the DVDs we'll be subbing all the promos, hardsubs only.

Episode 1 is being cleaned up, expect a release tomorrow.

俺に質問するな~!

I'm looking forward to translating some more episodes for OMFG, I hope to grow and become more efficient in the translation and localization of the dialog.

hello, world

Hey look! I'm the first post!

Wait a second, this is a blog entry not a forum post or comments page. Oh well, guess we should just push through and carry on with the introductions.  So if you "found" your way here (most likely from a link I posted on Henshin Justice) then you probably have some idea what this is.

We are a new fansub "group" (can 2 people make a group?) working on subbing a complete season of Super Sentai.  There are only two of us, myself doing the timing/encoding/QC and my roommate who will be handling the translating (he's fluent!).  What show are we translating? well that would be (drumroll please ...) Choriki Sentai Ohranger (Super Powered Squadron Ohranger if that's more your liking).

Not Pictured: Power Rangers Zeo
The plan is to release a hardsub and script file. We are using the R2 DVDs as a source so if the script doesn't play nice with other raws out there we may help oblige. We tested the hardsub on the PS3 and Xbox360, so those who like to watch their toku on the TV have little to fear.

First release will be later today. Ohre!
