Quick Status Update

I just finished timing Episode 6 and figured I would go ahead and tell people. To the left is a screenshot showing my proposed schedule for timing the next group of episodes. If I can stick with it I'll begin scheduling the rest.

I talked with the translator this morning (this evening for him). Mostly checking in on how holidays are going, but we did talk about getting episode 6 translated. Unfortunately for you guys, he's going on a trip to Tokyo until January 3rd, and will be unable to work on anything until then. Fortunately I should have more episodes ready by then (plus the movie) so we can hopefully put out a consistent release for a little while.

The Promo for episode 6 will be released once I have a translated script for the episode. From there you can expect the episode no later than a week, as we edit and QC things so they read like proper English (unlike this blog post). This is our policy with all of our promos and episodes.

Last thing. We were asked in the comments last post about torrents. The answer right now is no. I just don't have the bandwidth to seed, nor the money for a seedbox right now. That said if anyone does and wishes to make a torrent they are more than welcome to, and encouraged to send us the link. We'll gladly add it to our Release page and write up a post about it on the front page.

So much for a quick update. I'm off to go rip VOBs off disk 2 so I can start timing episode 7. I hope everyone has a Happy New Year.

  1. Hi, I'm just curious what exactly is the process for subtitling these releases? I really don't know anything about this but is it translated first then timed or vice versa? And what exactly is timing. Forgive my ignorance I'm just curious.

  2. OhGold! I've got a present for you!

If you feel like berating me, my email's Cyan@sky.com.

Lines fade out at 300ms (sooner if someone else starts speaking). I just guessed this, hopefully it's the same as your timing.

Additionally, I've added romanji as Intercom text during the opening/ending for people who like singing along, and fixed some minor errors in said opening and ending (shinning sun to shining sun, roger to ranger, does not to doesn't, etc...).

Don't feel you have to use it or anything though, just thought it would be nice to help (plus, getting some experience timing didn't hurt either).

megagreen335 - A timer figures out when a line starts and ends (so, when somebody starts speaking, the timer starts the line, and ends it a little after the person stops speaking.)

    The translator translates.

Then the whole thing goes through QC, or "Quality Checking", to try and eliminate any typos, translation errors or mis-timing.

There's also typesetting, which refers to the font and styles used on said font. SFX refers to special typesetting usually, like the logo-sized "Chouriki Sentai Ohranger" at the beginning of these subs.

    From, Cyan.

  3. Thanks Cyan, I don't have my Volume 2 dvds ripped yet, but just scanning over it, looks pretty good. We'll definitely use this for episode 13 and possibly sooner with the opening and ending, providing you Credit in the post of course.

As for the end line, 300ms should be fine. I usually just guesstimate as I'm timing, and once I get the translation adjust things in QC. It tends to vary based on the line itself (how long of a line, is it familiar like a name or attack, etc.)

megagreen335: We time before translating. I've heard of some groups that do it reverse, but we've found this method to be easier. Cyan pretty much laid out our process.

    Few notes:
-during QC we also edit the grammar to try and make it sound more like natural English and not directly translated Japanese. This is a very tricky dance where we try not to lose any of the intent, meaning, or keywords in the line.

-We use Aegisub to do all the script work. http://www.aegisub.org/

    - Promos are now hosted on youtube. (http://www.youtube.com/user/covar/videos) We'll be posting them on there as they come out, as well as providing download links. I won't be uploading episodes for two reasons 1) I don't have a premium account and don't want to break the episodes up and 2)I figure a promo is less likely to get pulled than a full episode.

  4. Credit, as in me? "P.D.J. Bowie" will do. Otherwise I'm not sure what you mean.

  5. Yep exactly. When we post the episode we will give you thanks and praise in the post and encourage other to do the same.
